REIMAGINING THE BORDER — VOICES AT THE BORDER

Common Ground Voices/La Frontera creates community music projects in collaboration with refugee shelters at the Mexico-US border. Their recent project DOS CUERPOS is available on YouTube.

WHAT IS COMMON GROUND VOICES/LA FRONTERA?

[Formed in March 2019]. . . We are a choir made up of American and Mexican singers who share an interest in learning about the issues at the Mexican border. We spent a week in March learning and creating music with a common theme of protest and struggle.  We were able to perform concerts on both sides of the border and visit a refugee center in Tijuana where we learned more about the situation there.  Since then, we’ve had 2 mini-encuentros, which consisted of 2 days of coming together in Tijuana to learn from migrants living in shelters and engage them.  We shared our music and, with them, created theatre from their stories of migration.

Our belief is that by bringing music and theatre to places of struggle as well as listening to those struggling, we are bringing a sense of humanity and a coming together that every soul needs to survive.
