Austin immigration and civil rights lawyer Virginia Raymond and retired law professor Elvia Arriola (Director for WOB) authored a critique of the for-profit detention system for immigration.
Giant global companies like GeoGroup, Inc. and Corrections Corporation of America profit hugely from contract with government. This means the use of taxpayer dollars to buy services for beds, food, housing, medical care and social work for children and parents.
The system is rife with delays, indifference to the needs of detainees, especially to migrants who have fled their home countries in search of safety and a new life they should be entitled to under international human rights law.
