The Board of Directors for Women on the Border thanks all of those who donated to our migrant rent assistance campaign at the 2021 holiday season.

We said any amount helps. We reached the goal of $3,000 and mailed $500 checks to landlords on behalf of six migrant families who have a right to enjoy the most basic of human rights – shelter.

Housing insecurity in America has gotten worse because of the COVID-19 pandemic.  Throughout the U.S., as recently reported in a powerful news report, on any given day there are about half a million people who don’t have a place to live.

Here in Austin, Texas, these six migrant families need stable housing as they await the resolution of their cases in immigration court. They need a settled location so their children can be enrolled in the public schools.

Your donations allowed Women on the Border to support the work of a group of dedicated individuals — Lorri Haden, Josefina Castillo, Lori Kline, Melanie Walter, and Melanie Cox — who have taken personal responsibility for supporting these families, in conjunction with other local non-profits Austin Sanctuary Network, Save the Food and Refugee Services of Texas Asylum Seekers Assistance Program.

These individuals and groups are committed to ensuring everyone’s right, regardless of citizenship status, to safe shelter and human dignity.
