Economic boycotting
Boycotting as a tool to effect social change has a long history in the U.S.A.
This organization supports the tool of the economic boycott. We were founded in 2000 with a mission of raising awareness over the impact of NAFTA on working women in the U.S. owned maquiladoras at the Mexican border. We knew that hundreds of companies opened factories across the border and elevated profit over safety and decent wages for their workers. The corporate indifference by NAFTA investors had contributed to a culture of violence against women in the U.S.-Mexico borderlands. We have supported ethical or fair trade shopping and celebrated Austin’s annual Women and Fair Trade festival. The economic boycott can send a powerful message to the corporation that it must stop a practice or change a set of policies that are denying people their basic human rights.
Economic boycotting is currently a tool of the new 50501 movement which arose in the days following Trump’s signing of troubling executive orders, including many that are already hurting long term non-citizen residents and refugees.
The 50501 movement is a peaceful movement that will not tolerate violence. Its expressed mission is to use protest throughout the country to uphold the United States Constitution and to prevent overreach by the Executive Branch.
The following 50501 economic protest events are in the February calendar:
FEBRUARY 20, 2025, 12 A.M. TO 12 MIDNIGHT – NO VISA PURCHASES ONLINE
It is specific to protesting the alliance between VISA and the owner of the X social media platform who now heads an operation created by Trump called DOGE.
FEBRUARY 28, 2025, 12 A.M. TO 12 MIDNIGHT
Various protests described as either economic blackout, one-day no purchases boycott, or corporate blackout. The organizers of these boycotts see them as a refusal to play by the rules of the billionaires surrounding the new president and to orchestrate a widespread movement to stop buying tainted corporate goods.
Finally, other consumers are expanding their use of consumer power to companies who support the Project 2025 agenda.
